Beating the Odds – Consistently Building Winning Products

STLE Annual Meeting 2021 - Presentation by Dr. E Jon Schnellbacher

ABSTRACT:

It is said certain composers and writers have a method to produce multiple successful products over a period of time. Do similar method exist which companies can use to produce winning new products? Over the past 25 years, the Product Development Management Association (PDMA) conducted a series of innovation surveys identifying over 50 new product development (NPD) best practices contributing to NPD success. With so many best practices, how do companies incorporate these best practices into practice? This paper discusses using best practices and levels of innovation for developing industrial metalworking fluids. Using various stakeholder’s viewpoints, a unified strategy can be developed assisting adoption of ideas.  From this research, a framework is introduced to measure and build upon the unique strengths of each company in improving NPD success.

Beating the Odds - Extended Abstract and Notes

North American Chemical Manufacturers Best Practices Study (NACM-BPS) was a research 2017 study which surveys 212 practitioner respondents primarily from commercial B2B manufacturing companies in North America in the industrial chemical marketplace using a survey tool to determine their company's New Product Development Best Practices (NPD-BP) Index in seven critical dimensions (7D-NPD) as identified by experts in the product development community.

Determining Your Company's NPD-BP Index

Questions are asked about the frequency of use within a company of best practices in each of the seven dimensions (7D-NPD) by a multi-choice survey. Scoring the results of the survey and multip[lying the answer by a factor which corresponds to the level of importance for each dimension. The sum of all the question results times factor will give a percentage out of 100 possible points. This sum represents the NPD-BP Index, or a score of NPD-BP index at the point in time.maturity

What are the Seven Dimensions of NPD-BP

3

The seven dimensions of NPD are: Strategy, Research, Commercialization, Process, Performance Measurements, Climate, and Culture

Accessing Your Company's Index

4

Comparing the raw scores for each dimension of NPD-BP maturity out of the total highest possible score x100 gives a percentage for each dimension. This allows a company to determine its strongest and weakest areas of NPD-BP maturity. Comparing weak dimensions with recommended best practices in that dimension gives recommendations to consider implementing in a company.  Contact info@formulas.solutions to receive a guide to determining your company's NPD-BPS index .

Improving Your Company's NPD-BP Index

5

Companies can take the survey, identify dimension to improve NPD best practices, and then reassess by taking the survey again. Since the survey measures NPD best practices, their score should improve.  Additionally, since a relationship from the NACM-BPS shows a relationship between NPD-BP and success, the company also improves their chances of Beating the Odds and improving their NPD success with more winning products.

STLE Slides & NPD-BP Maturity Index Resources

  • These are the resources which will assist you in determining your company's NPD BP Maturity:
  • STLE 2021 - Beating the Odds: Consistently Building Successful New Products (Schnellbacher, E.J., 2021) - These are the slides presented at STLE 2021
  • NACM-BPS Survey (Schnellbacher, 2016) - These are the actual survey questions in the format used in the North American Chemical Manufacturers Best Practices Study. This is also the format for companies to use to determine NPD maturity of the seven dimensions of NPD (7D-NPD)
  • NACM Survey Instrument Questions (Schnellbacher, 2017) - This is a high level view of the questions as groups by each of the seven dimensions.
  •  Comparison of Best vs Worst NPD Practices from “An Examination of New Product Best Practice” (2012) by K. Kahn, G. Barczak, J. Nicholas, J..Ledwith, & H. Perks, Journal of Innovation Management,29(2), p. 190.  This is the comaprison to use after scoring NPD-BP maturity.
  • Identifying NPD Best Practices by Barczak & Kahn (2012) in Business Horizons. This is the foundational article for the NACM study.
  • Kahn et. al. (2006), article was one of the first articles to propose benchmarking NPD best practices. My measuring the maturity of NPD best practices, you are then able to manage them to improvement.
